Minority zin

Hello there. Give a nice intro to the readers.

Hi, here's SHEEVA YOGA crew... It means VIKI, SKULDA and me - FIDO... Were' a hardcore band from Czech Republic and we're sendin' big cheers to every fan of MINORITY zine, who's readin' this interview now!!! And we hope that if you'll like our answers even not, you'll try to find our crazy musick and enjoy it!!!

Could you tell us about yourself and about your band history. What is the meaning of Sheeva Yoga. How do you meet each others.

Viki and me, we know each-other from our childhood, we're from the same end of our city, we attended same basic school and when we were 14-15, we decided to found a band... The first music experiments were something between noisecore and industrial, than we played something between folkpunk and trashmetal and in 1994 we found a band called SOCIAL DEFORMITY…We were 3 members' band, I played distorted bass, VIKI played drums and our friend ROMAN sang... SKULDA joined us on bass in spring 1996, so I exchanged bass for guitar and DAN joined us in spring 1997 on the second guitar... We played grindcore and released a lot of split and compilation tapes, I think the best stuff of us was MCD "Daltonism" released in summer 1997... After this release we broke up 'cos of different opinions on next evolution of our music... ROMAN and DAN wanted to make only that radical grindnoise and we others wanted to experiment with other genres... So, we 3 others made a new band called SHEEVA YOGA and went on in that broached grindcore envision but with a lot of freedom and invention... We had 2 female singers in our band's history, but it wasn't good idea,'cos we're gentlemen and made our musick more softer for our girls... It was quite crazy period of our history, we had 4 vocals and it was something between folk, punk, jazz, metal, hardcore, grindcore, industrial, everything... Simply unlistenable choas as fuck!!! So, when the last singer BARA left us for au-pair in England, we forgot all the old songs and with our 3-members line-up again made whole new stuff which is more harder and more apprehensible now, we hope... In summer 2000 we released promotion tape "Promo 2000", we sent it to some labels and label HYENYZM RECORDS from Czech republic too released us 7"EP split with Czech fastcore band NOT in 2001 and 7"EP split with German scarecore band STERBEHILFE in 2002... We also have some stuff on many compilations, I think the world known one is CD "Obscene Extreme 2002" compilation from OBSCENE PRODUCTIONS, mainly with death-metal/gore-grind/death-grind bands... Next one is MC "Common Life" compilation with hardcore/punk/emo bands, for example MORE BAD NEWS, SOCIAL INSECURITY, HEAD TRAUMA, ILL SOCIETY, CRUCIFY YOURSELF, X-WING, ACTION, GOD GIVEN HATE, etc., which was released by DRUGS KILL YOUR MINDS RECORDS and the fresh one is 3-way split with Czech emo violence band CRUCIFY YOURSELF and Italian punk band ARTURO, released by OUT OF CONTROL RECORDS...

So, today's line-up is: VIKI - drums, vocals... SKULDA - bass, vocals, mouth-organ manual manipulation... FIDO - guitars, vocals, mouth-organ oral manipulation, samples&programming...

And what is the meaning of SHEEVA YOGA??? It's from Indic language of course and it means "connection with erect penis"... It hasn't any sexistic sense, simply I think that everybody knows, does and likes this fascinatin' act of love... We think that love is a beautiful activity at all of its forms... So, maybe we can say, t'hat were a hippie-grindcore :-) ...

What your defination of your music. What is your influence and how do you stuck to this kind of music.

We say "strangcore" to our style of musick... We have stolen this genre from our the most favourite band MEXICAN POWER AUTHORITY from Canada... But sometimes we call it "acid-grind", "goreggae", "dis-ska" and maybe "emo-violence" (and from today we can say hippie-grindcore), simply were alternative hardcore... We mix old school hardcore roots with other genres from reggae, ska, jazz thru emo, punk, metal to grindcore, noisecore, industrial, but we hope more organized now than before... A lot of people say that we play like SPAZZ and we gotta agree... Yeah, we're 3 members as they're, we play stop'n'go style of fastcore as they play and everybody sings as they do too... OK, we won't lie, we like SPAZZ very much!!! Our next big influence is SCRAWL from Germany, if you don't know 'em, try to find 'em, 'cos they're so unique!!! Crazy combination of grindcore and jazz - WOW!!! And my favorite band, which my guitar-playin' style comes out, is DEFTONES... We like a lot bands and interprets which and who combine styles even not, for example in no specific order: M.P.A., Scrawl, Spazz, Deftones, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Fantomas, Mr.Bungle, John Zorn, Naked City, Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Codeseven, Guyana Punch Line, Thema 11, Lvmen, Ravelin 7, Mohinder, Copywrong, King Biscuit, Green Beret, Kontrovers, His Hero Is Gone, From Ashes Rise, The Cost, Dropdead, Ekkaia, Devin Townsend, Strapping Young Lad, Virulence, N.I.N., The Hub, Rotello, etc....

And how we've stuck to it??? I think that everybody wants to find ownself somewhere and the art is good way to do it... Everybody tries to find an alternative to everyday circle and madness of our lives... And it's not important if a human searchs him/her in drawin' pictures, writin' poems, playin' some instrument, playin' theater or anything else... Find yourself wherever you want... We've chosen musick, strictly speakin' - hardcore is our way of expression... We feel it, we like it, we're happy that we can be a part of hardcore/punk subculture, 'cos hardcore is that alternative for us, hardcore makes us free...

Tell us more about your release. Which one is your favourite release. What is your next release.

I've talked about our releases in the second answer, so I'm talkin' now about our next releases... We're recordin' and mixin' our new stuff just now... It will be total D.I.Y. recordin', 'cos we record it in our rehearsal room, but with professional microphones and I mix it with profi musick software on my computer... And our next plan is to release next 7"EP by HYENYZM RECORDS again and it will be 4-way split with 2 crazy hardcore bands and 2 crazy free-jazz bands... Named it will be our band of course, GREEN BERET (chaotic hardcore from USA), THE HUB (great free-jazz from USA) and TRES HOMBRES(great free-jazz too from Austria)... And than we wanna make "Promo 2003" and send it to some labels again, but I think that our "familiar" label HYENYZM RECORDS will release our stuff again... We want self-contained or split again, but full-lenth LP or CD... But we will see... You know, everything depends on money... Otherwise, soon we will release 3-way split with the best Czech noisecore band NAPALMED and our ex-band SOCIAL DEFORMITY and it will be a tape full of remixes and it will be released by ZMANIPULOVANA BRAMBORA RECORDS and by our D.I.Y. self-help as a tape and CD-R... And we hope that there will be also a lot of compilations and so on.

What you guys doing beside playing with Sheeva Yoga (playing with other band, zine, label, distro, work, etc).

We have side-project called DISNEY and it's total Swerige dis-crust-mangel... We make only short, simple and fast songs, we sing in Swedish or Finish language, usually were totally drunken on our gigs, we talk with people about Skandinavian peninsula and it's only big big big fun:...

VIKI had a small distro and zine but he hadn't got it under his control 'cos of time busyness (he is busy 'cos of his work mainly), so he finished this activity a few years ago... He works in a market with fruit and vegetables and his main hobby is musick!!! So, he plays with Sheeva, trips on concerts, buys vinyls, tapes, and CD´s and listen and listen and listen to it again...

SKULDA is a student of history and archeology and his main hobby is also musick!!! So, he does the same things as VIKI and me

And I work as an assistent of sound, camera and light in Czech TV... And my hobbies are musick of course, drawin' surrealistic pictures, computer graphix and computer musick...

What do you think about tradition. Do you believe in any tradition. Do you think that tradition is just an oppression towards people in many ways.

It depends on many things…Yes, we celebrate classic and traditional holidays of course such as Christmas or Easter but not ´cos of our belief…These holidays are originally christian´s and sacred ones and we´re really not belivers…But today´s holidays already aren´t about religion a lot, today´s holiday´s are mostly about mass shoping of presents…For example, one Czech saying says that "Christmas is a holiday of calm and peace", but irony is that a lot of people goes crazy thru the Cristmass,´cos they wanna quickly dig up presents on the last time, so there are thousands and thousands of people in streets and they are chaotic, usually angry on each-other and everything other bad but be sure they aren´t calm and peacefull…But traditional holidays don´t bring only that negative things…It´s good that all families try to be together, to be kind on each-other, try to make your neighbourhood happy…Not only families, even such all charitable institutions give homeless poeple food for free and so on…But on the second side, it´s quite sad…I think it would be commonplace to be kind on others and make others happy not only one day in the year but all the year, all the time…

And about traditions like traditional music, art, food, drinks, etc.…I think we would know our traditions, it´s an indispensable part of our countrys´ history…We would learn from traditions and history, take the best things from, we would stand on the past, pull out the present and jump to the future…

So what is DIY really mean to you. Is it just Do It Yourself or more about it.

D.I.Y. is the main hardcore thought for us…And it´s really not only a blank record for us…It´s a method of our expression…We pin our each-other's faith upon, we fortunately have a lot of friends in our close neighbourhood, in our country and also around the world who support us…We think that this underground cooperation in harcore/punk subculture is the way how to show to people unknowin´ of these things that there is not only an official mass-culture but there is an alternative which isn´t only about money and makin´ of stupid and funny idols!!! So, we wanna thank everybody who helps us and helps each-other incuding you Aizat, of course…

We make our musick by ourselves, play it by ourselves, record it by ourselves, release it by our friend PETR from HYENYZM, I make all graphix for our recordings, make remixes of our songs(and not only our ones, I make also graphix and remixes for other bands), we all scratch about for gigs, we organize hardcore/punk gigs for other bands, we write reviews and other articles for some ´zines, etc., etc.…

I think, there is no need to be a puppet on strings which is led by hands of some stupid manager from supra-national musick concern, we have our own heads, hearts, souls, hands and legs, we aren´t little children, we can do everything by ourselves!!!

DO IT YOURSELF FOREVER!!!

What is your favourite food and your hobby. What is you favourite record.

I like to eat, it´s my favourite hobby:…No, my and I think I can write our favourite hobby is musick of course as I´ve written thereinbefore…And I´ve also rendered some of our hobbies in 5th answer…

Return back to food - We like to eat many kinds of food…VIKI and me, we both were vegetarians a few years ago, but ´cos of some health problems we gave it over, so we eat everything now…

We like girls so much, but I don´t know if I can say that they´re our hobby:… And we all like to go to pubs and clubs…Sit down and make conversation with friends, talk about things we like or not and drink beer of course…And if there is some live gig, we like to watch and listen to other bands…

And we like HARDCORE!!! And everything which is connected with it…But I don´t wanna say it over and over again…

And about our favourite records - I think I´ve written a lot of our favourite bands in 3rd answer…So, we like every recording which that bands done… I think we´re relatively "normal" people, so we do relatively "normal" things…Nothing cataclysmal, nothing extra interestin´…Accordingly except our musick…I hope our musick is quite interestin´…

Thank you for taking a time answer this interview. Thank you very much.

We would like to thank you a lot for give us a space in your ´zine to express our thoughts, feelings and information…And we hope this interview will help people to get to know more about us in your country and somebody will search our musick around the world and it´s whichsoever if thru our official recordings or some compilations or thru Net…

ENJOY SHEEVA YOGA!!! ENJOY HARCORE!!! Thanx…
